Acworth Parks and Recreation Employees Shine at Annual Awards Banquet

On Wednesday, October 19, 2011, two Acworth Parks and Recreation team members were recognized for their exemplary performance over the last year by their peers. Each year the Georgia Recreation and Parks Association’s Fifth District, consisting of all the Parks and Recreation agencies in Northwest Georgia, holds their annual awards banquet to recognize the top professionals within the district for their performance. Lauren Ham and Aaron Ross both received awards from the District.

Lauren Ham, who currently serves as the city’s Special Populations Coordinator, received the “Outstanding Programmer of the Year Award.” Mrs. Ham oversees all Senior Citizen and Special Needs Programs for the city. Lauren has been instrumental in the success of the Horizon Field and its continued growth. She has a unique ability to create relationships with program participants, their families, and community organizations that support the Horizon Field.

Aaron Ross was recognized as the “Outstanding Facility and Grounds Maintenance Staff Member of the Year.” Mr. Ross started with the department more than four years ago as an intern. He was promoted to Parks Operations Manager in July of this year where he oversees the operation and maintenance of the city’s 13 parks and more than 800 acres of green space. Aaron’s servant leadership and “get it done” type of attitude provides tremendous support to his peers within the department and quality leadership to his team.

“We are extremely proud of them,” said James Albright, the city’s Parks and Recreation Director. “Our Department’s success heavily depends on the quality of people we have serving our community. Both employees take great pride in their jobs and it shows!”

During the month February, the City of Acworth recognized and proclaimed February 17 Tuskegee Airman Leonard Collins Hall, Jr. Day. With assistance from the students of the Acworth Achievers Mentoring and After School Program, Mr. Hall received the original proclamation and a rare plaque which featured the signature Tuskegee Airmen P-51 World War II fighter plane.

The Tuskegee Airmen were the first African Americans to serve in the United States of America Army Air Force. During the era which this was accomplished, the Tuskegee Airmen not only fought in World War II but also faced many racial struggles and barriers in their homeland. Mr. Hall was accompanied by his daughter Attorney Angela Brown who was also recognized as being Cobb County’s First African American female District Attorney.

Expanding Horizons to the Kennedy Space Center

Acworth’s Expanding Horizons Program sets its sights on the Kennedy Space Center. Funded by a private benefactor Expanding Horizons uses the local schools to identify students which will be taken on one educational field trip per month throughout the school year. For 16 lucky participants, they will spend 4 days in Cape Canaveral, Florida during the February break participating in the Kennedy Space Center Student Astronaut Training Experience. The training includes space mission simulations and even a ride on multiple space shuttle simulators. The group will be lodging on the popular Cocoa Beach next to Ron Jon Surf Shop. The trip is geared to provide them the immeasurable educational opportunity to visit the nation’s marquee NASA site, increase their knowledge and understanding of aeronautics, and develop memories they have for a life time.

The Old Mill Restaurant is now The Mill Pub

The Old Mill Restaurant has changed names, and is now The Mill Pub. Billed as historic Acworth’s only neighborhood pub, The Mill Pub features old favorites as well as many new sandwiches, salads, burgers, wings, and more. The operating hours have changed as well. They are now open all day Tuesday through Sunday and feature $3 draft beer and $5 margaritas. We called to verify, and they are still open for Sunday brunch. Hopefully their Belgian Waffles are still on the menu ;-)
